The 1st XV continued their promising start to the season with a hard fought win against the team just below us in the league.

Looking at the bare facts - the gathered VP’s though the team had chucked the game away when in the dying seconds a penalty gave the Glossop Stand off the chance to come away with the points that would have leapfrogged Bowdon in the table. As it was the rugby gods smiled and for the first time in a couple of seasons the last kick went our way with the ball drifting away from the posts.

The result moved Bowdon up to 3rd in the league, but with harder games to come in the next few weeks complacency cannot set in. The first 6 games so far have given the optimistic amongst us reason to smile. The more pessimistic at Clay Lane will look at the injury toll and the tougher games to come in the coming weeks and months!

For the game a couple of late call offs resulted in a reshuffle and some frantic calls to get people to the right Game - Thanks to Liam Rice for coming to warm the bench for 70 mins, receiving a call while in the changing room with the 2’s. From the kick off this was going to be a tough game - as always. Bo’ took the lead from Swets boot, but on the half hour we found ourselves 8 : 3 behind, Glossop scoring the first half’s only try. At the interval the arears were reduced to 2 points, Swets splitting the posts again from a penalty.

Ten minutes into the second half and the home side were 7 points behind Glossop again scoring out wide on the right. Compared to our two previous home games the backs weren’t being given the space to show what they can achieve, although occasional flashes were there. Daffyd and Liam were smashing away in midfield, occasionally bursting through and making good yards. On more than one occasion a wayward final pass was the difference between a certain score and remaining trailing the opposition.

Finally for the home fans Tom Oben acrobatically scored in the corner. Tom touching the ball down before his feet hit the side lines, much to the consternation of the vociferous travelling support and linesman, the score correctly given by the Ref. This set up a final 20 minutes with Bowdon chasing a 2 point deficit. With 13 minutes to go this was turned into a 1 point advantage, just after a Glossop player was sin binned for persistently entering the ruck from the side.

The final minutes had both teams going at each other looking for the killer score. In the last seconds of the game from a ruck 35 meters out and to the right of the posts Dan Brown was penalised for a deliberate knock, receiving a yellow card for his sins too.

As the crowd held their breath the ball sailed wide giving Bowdon the Win.

No doubt this will be a game that the visitors will feel they could and should have won. The home fans will probably say it was a game we just about dissevered to win, in fact with some composure at the final pass should have won more convincingly.

After the game the story of the home try was becoming a bigger and bigger tail. The last I hear was Tom Picked up the ball in our in goal area - ran the full length of the pitch, summersaulted over 3 players before touching down while still in mid-air! I’m sure the video will emerge in the near future.
All 18 players played their part in the victory, Lee Brennand leading the way on the tackle count, Angel making his debut putting in a big tackle in the second half! All in all a tough day, but a win is a win!
