Beating Sandbach 26-14 in the final of the Cheshire Bowl

Well done to all of the Bowdon squad on a great run in the Cheshire Cup this year - culminating in only one loss and us winning the Cheshire Bowl!

With a strong squad of 20 Bowdon had already decided to start with 13 and replace 7 at half time, meaning that every boy got at least 20 minutes of big game action.

Caldy were excellent hosts and the boys all enjoyed having their own peg in the first team dressing room. It was fairly obvious that whilst coming onto the 1st team pitch that a few of the boys were nervous, especially given the very large crowd that had gathered during the day. The early nerves showed as we lost the opening score with the Sandbach SH running from the back of a ruck straight over - Bowdon quickly scored their own Try but on a windy day our player could not get the ball to stay on the kicking tee and the referee surprisingly deciding to not allow the kick as he deemed us to be time wasting (score 5-7).

Sandbach score again and converted before we pulled one back with the last play of the second half and went in to the half-time break losing 12-14.

The 7 changes worked well for Bowdon with fresh legs having an immediate impact as we scored straight after the break (19-14) and the oncoming replacements working just as hard and as impressively as the first half players. Bowdon had 3 or 4 Trys held up by Sandbach which kept the scores tight, whilst Bowdon themselves remained resolute in defence against the very speedy Sandbach backs.

Once again Bowdons strength in defence turned into speedy attacks as Bowdon deservedly ran in their fourth Try of the match after constant pressure in the Sandbach half (26-14).

The game was refereed very strongly and strictly (something the boys will have to get use to as they step up to junior Rugby next season), but also very fairly - celebrations aplenty as we collected the silverware and returned to the Lane - Fittingly the boys arrived to a guard of honour from Bowdon members and also the president of the Cheshire RFU, but more importantly to the boys was the Pizza and drinks that the club kindly put on!

Many other teams didn't make any substitutions and we were all proud to uphold the ethos of giving every child equal game time which is something that has made us one of the strongest squads in Cheshire at our age group, as we have allowed all boys to develop in their own time - Another great day out for us all and a fitting end to this season!

Well done to all of the squad, all of the coaching team and all of the parents - thanks as ever for your support in what we are doing with the boys on the pitch and now with 3 or 4 of the speediest wingers in Cheshire we certainly look forward to 15 a side with full size pitches next season!
