On a bright but chilly January afternoon, a strong Bowdon 2nd XV travelled to Liverpool looking to extend their good run of form into 2018.

From the kick off, Bowdon implemented the simple game plan advocated by skipper Pete Lineham – play a couple of forward phases, and let our talented back line go. Within minutes, Bowdon had broken the deadlock, dotting down under the posts for a converted try. The same pattern continued until half time, with Sam Royle, Lineham and Pat Fitzgerald making big yardage for the forwards against a tackle-shy opposition, and the boys in the back line (marshalled by half-back combo Ben Sutherland and Alex Bright) running amok.

The second half carried on in much the same vein. Despite the introduction of a new number 10 (who quickly made friends with our skipper), Sefton were unable to contain a rampant Bowdon side. Tries continued to flow right until the 80th minute. Which leads me to the final play of the game…

Legend will say that he collected the ball on halfway, beat 3 defenders, chipped the fullback, collected his kick and dived over under the posts. Others that were there may remember it slightly differently. But 5 points is 5 points, and hooker Mark Shiel, at the grand old age of 41, finally scored his first senior try for Bowdon.

Too many try scorers to remember them all, but they included Nick Foster, Alex Bright, Pete Lineham, Sam Royle, Paul Mosley, Kenji King, Ben Sutherland and Mark Shiel.

Notable mentions go to:

• Alex Bellingham, who put in a solid 80-minute shift in the front row (although we won’t mention that kick off)
• Paul Mosley for 11 conversions out of 12
• Jonny Stubbs for some big tackles in the centres

A disappointing lack of Christmas shower gel and deodorant in the showers afterwards, but otherwise a good afternoon for Bowdon made even better by Kersal 2’s losing to Aldwinians. With Glossop taking on Holmes Chapel next week, another good performance at Didsbury could see Bowdon move back into a promotion spot for the first time since early season.

Bowdon: Clive Wilkins, Mark Shiel, Alex Bellingham, Pat Fitzgerald, Sam Royle, Billy Stirling, Ben Dilworth, Pete Lineham(C), Ben Sutherland, Alex Bright (VC), Nick Foster, Jonny Stubbs, Chris Watts, Kenji King, Paul Mosley. Rep Clem M, Ben Law
